The Creed:

Justice to each fellow man

Wisdom in each deed and plan

Loyalty to every friend

Faith that sorrow can transcend

Truth to God and truth to self

Honor valued over wealth

This is the creed that in us lies

The creed of loyal Theta Phis.

The white rose for its purity

The sapphire blue for loyalty

The compass for its needle sure

That holds our course firm and secure

The silver for a precious faith

That knows no end not even death

This is the creed that in us lies

The creed of loyal Theta Phis.

Theta Phi Alpha is a national women's social fraternity.   The mission of Theta Phi Alpha encompasses far more than providing a social network for college women. For more than 90 years, the sisters of Theta Phi Alpha have maintained a history rich in educational excellence, professional achievement, and a deep commitment to social service.

The Alpha Zeta Chapter at the Franciscan University of Steubenville was founded in 1963.  The national organization was founded in 1912 by Bishop Edward D. Kelly at the university of Michigan in Ann Arbor.  Along with Bishop Kelly were ten women, who we hold as our founders.  Theta Phi Alpha is one of two Greek letter organizations recognized by the University.  We do many fundraisers to help our national philanthropy's, and also go two Saturdays a month to Holy Name Cathedral in downtown Steubenville.  During our time at Holy Name, we work with the Franciscan TOR Sisters to help prepare and serve meals, meet and pray with the local underprivileged residents, and make arts and crafts with the children.

Theta Phi Alpha was originally founded to offer Catholic women the experience of sorority life, as other sororities did not include Catholic women. In 1968, all restrictive membership clauses were removed from Theta Phi Alpha’s National Constitution and Bylaws and Theta Phi Alpha opened up its membership to all women regardless of race, creed or religious belief.

Theta Phi Alpha has adopted Saint Catherine of Siena as its patroness. We have also adopted her motto as our own: “Nothing great is ever achieved without much enduring.”
